The Christmas dishes in our house are a source of contention. I love my Christmas dishes. They were Jeff's mom's. Jeff's mom loved these dishes. Jeff however, does not. He complains everytime I get them out. He has even joked around about replacing them without telling me. (This had better just be a joke!) He doesn't like them because they have a metallic ring around the outside of them which prevents them from being microwaveable and they have a lip which he argues makes them too small for "normal" people. I don't think we have sat down to a meal since Thanksgiving when I got the dishes out that we haven't talked about these plates...
Well, while I did put all the Christmas decorations away before I went back to work in January the dishes were the one thing that didn't get taken care of...I finally did it today. They went up in the hope chest and the everyday Crate and Barrel dishes (which, by the way Jeff complained about when I originally purchased) that can go in the microwave and don't have a lip came out. He was excited. Today I am thankful for two things. 1) That I have dishes from Jeff's Mom, so a bit of her memory can live in our house during the holidays and 2) That we won't have the Christmas dish discussion for the next ten months or so.
Dear God, Thank you that I have a piece of Diane in my household. Thank you that this extraordinary woman is a part of our family legacy. Thank you for allowing us to use humor to settle our contention over the dishes. Amen.
